Proteus is a registered charity, whose aims are to take in and care for sick, injured and unwanted reptiles from all over Britain. It is staffed totally by volunteers who conduct the activities of the organisation in accordance with the constitution (the Proteus governing document), and the Volunteer Guidelines.
The organisation was founded in October 1991 after one of its founder members had an article published appealing to people to think very carefully before purchasing turtles, especially Red eared terrapins. This article was elaborated slightly by tabloid press, which informed the public that a sanctuary had been opened for such creatures. Since its founding, the rescue has dealt with hundreds of turtles, snakes and lizards.
The rescue service is presently used not only by the general public but also by zoos, various Police forces and the RSPCA. This service is carried out with the use of our veterinary ambulance, the first reptile ambulance in the U.K . The ambulance covers the UK mainland and is on call 24 hours a day.
Volunteers not only provide a rescue service, but also an educational service visiting school children, the handicapped, and many other societies promoting greater awareness of the husbandry required when keeping reptiles in captivity.
The majority of the animals which come into the rescue require a lot of attention. Many suffering from severe burns, missing limbs, malnutrition and general neglect. Months can be spent trying to regain the animal's confidence and trust. When the animal has recovered from its illness, it is then placed in the rehoming center where it awaits a future caring home. None of the animals that come into the care of Proteus are ever sold.
Proteus are dedicated to educating people from all backgrounds of life in the correct captive care and management of reptiles. In order to achieve this we work with Local Education Authorities to provide an educational service for school children as well as running qualified residential and correspondence training courses for members of the public, veterinary surgeons and animal care workers.
